Edith Stohl was born in 1906 in Connecticut. Better known as Edie, she was the second of four children; Evelyn was two years older. Her father John, a Swedish immigrant, was a machinist for Bullard Metal Goods. Edie attended Columbia University, and prior to the road trip worked as a stenographer.

How did Edith, Evelyn, and Dorothy know one another?
Edie and Ev were sisters, and Dotty was friends with Edie from being the same age and growing up in the same general area. Well she was friends with both of them, but it was Edie first.
So they were childhood friends? Did they all work together when they were stenographers too?
I don’t know the exact age that they became friends, but it was definitely school age (pre-college as Edie moved for school). They were not working together as stenographers before the trip either, from what I can determine from City Directory info. It’s definitely an area to research further before the trip starts, as it would be a great addition to my narrative.
Agreed! I’m so curious about these three gutsy gals!
